As drone technology continues to evolve, so do the possibilities for businesses, real estate agents, and event planners. In this post, we’ll share some key takeaways from offering drone videography in Johannesburg’s diverse and vibrant market, and how these insights can elevate your next project. The Value of Aerial Videography in Johannesburg Johannesburg is a city of contrasts—sprawling suburbs, towering skyscrapers, and historic landmarks, all teeming with life and opportunity. Aerial videography brings a fresh perspective to this urban landscape. Here’s how: Real Estate : Showcase properties from angles that ground-based photography simply can’t capture. Drones provide a bird’s-eye view of neighborhoods, amenities, and the full scope of properties, giving potential buyers a complete picture. Events and Marketing : From corporate events to festivals, drones offer dynamic shots that make promotional videos more engaging. The unique vantage point adds a cinematic flair to videos, drawing in viewers. Construction and Development : Regular aerial surveys can track progress, highlight project milestones, and provide valuable footage for stakeholders. Lessons Learned Over the Years As experienced drone operators in Johannesburg, we’ve learned a lot about what it takes to deliver high-quality aerial footage. Here are our top five takeaways: Know the Rules and Regulations Operating drones in a bustling city like Johannesburg comes with a strict set of rules, especially when flying near airports or densely populated areas. Over the years, we’ve developed a deep understanding of South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) regulations, ensuring that every project is compliant and safe. The Johannesburg Weather Factor Johannesburg’s weather can be unpredictable, with sudden winds or thunderstorms appearing out of nowhere. We’ve learned to adapt by keeping a close eye on forecasts and being ready to pivot our shoot schedules to make the most of clear skies. Tailoring Aerial Videography to the Client's Needs Every client has a different vision. Whether it’s capturing the grand scale of a new real estate development or focusing on intimate moments during an outdoor event, we’ve learned that listening closely to the client’s goals helps us plan shots that hit the mark. The Art of Storytelling with Drones While aerial shots are visually stunning, they’re most effective when they contribute to a larger narrative. At duPlooyMedia, we’ve honed the craft of weaving drone footage into the story—whether it’s the flow of a promotional video or the journey of a real estate listing. It’s not just about capturing scenery; it’s about creating emotion. Flexibility is Key In a fast-paced environment like Johannesburg, things can change quickly. We’ve learned to stay nimble, adjusting to last-minute changes in location, weather, or even client needs, ensuring the final product exceeds expectations no matter the challenges. - The Power of Drone Photography in Real Estate Marketing
In today’s fast-paced real estate market, making a property stand out is more important than ever. Drone photography has revolutionized the way homes and commercial properties are showcased, providing potential buyers with stunning, bird's-eye views that highlight every detail of a property and its surroundings. Unlike traditional photography, drones capture expansive shots that emphasize the scale and beauty of a property, from large estates to urban developments. This post will explore the benefits of using drone photography in real estate marketing, including: Showcasing the full property layout: Aerial shots allow buyers to see the property in its entirety, highlighting lot size, landscape features, and proximity to neighboring amenities. Capturing surrounding areas: Beyond the property itself, drone photography provides views of nearby parks, schools, roads, and infrastructure, offering buyers a comprehensive understanding of the location. Boosting engagement: Listings with drone photos and videos receive significantly more attention from potential buyers, leading to higher interest and faster sales. At duPlooyMedia , we specialize in high-quality drone photography that makes your listings unforgettable. - How to Film Commercial Spaces and Warehouses Safely and Effectively
Filming commercial spaces, especially large warehouses, comes with its own set of challenges. From navigating the vast size of the space to capturing the key details buyers or renters care about, it’s important to approach the project with careful planning and awareness of safety hazards. This blog will walk you through how to film warehouses safely and effectively, highlighting the dangers of indoor drone flying, the best camera techniques, and how to use music and editing to create an engaging final product. 1. Understanding the Space Before filming begins, it’s essential to get familiar with the building. Each commercial space has unique features that should be highlighted, including: Ceiling Height : High ceilings are often a selling point, so be sure to emphasize them. Rolling Shutter Doors : These are key for showcasing how accessible the warehouse is for trucks or equipment. Sprinkler Systems & Safety Features : Fire protection and other safety measures like alarms and exits are crucial for tenants or buyers to know about. Storage & Layout : Make sure to capture the building’s overall layout and any dedicated storage areas or shelving. Having a clear understanding of the space helps guide your filming approach and ensures that nothing important is overlooked. 2. Always Bring a Safety Officer or Building Expert One important tip for filming in warehouses is to always have someone familiar with the building—like a safety officer or facility manager—accompany you during the shoot. They can guide you through the space, alert you to potential hazards, and ensure you don’t accidentally press, bump into, or activate any machinery or systems. Warehouses are often filled with technical equipment, and having an expert on hand will help prevent mishaps, ensuring a smooth and safe shoot. 3. The Dangers of Flying Drones Indoors Flying drones inside a building—especially one with a steel roof—can be risky. Steel can interfere with your drone's signal, and the enclosed space increases the chance of crashing into obstacles like: Sprinkler Systems Lighting Fixtures Beams or Structural Supports Drones are fantastic tools for capturing sweeping shots, but when flying indoors, there’s little room for error. If you must use a drone inside, make sure to use a spotter and keep the flight paths simple and clear. Alternatively, handheld gimbals are a safer option for capturing smooth interior shots without risking damage to the building or your equipment. 4. Camera Settings: Get the Focus Right When shooting large spaces like warehouses, your camera settings play a huge role in delivering sharp, high-quality footage. A good rule of thumb is to use a higher f-stop (around f/15+ ) when shooting wide shots of the building. This will give you a greater depth of field , ensuring that the entire scene is in focus, from the nearest object to the farthest wall. This technique is great for showing off the scale of the warehouse and its interior features without a distracting blurry background. For more detailed or close-up shots , such as focusing on a rolling shutter door or control panel, switch to a lower f-stop (like f/2.8 - f/5.6 ). This will create a shallow depth of field , allowing the background to blur slightly and keeping the focus on the subject. It’s a great way to draw attention to important features or highlight the craftsmanship of certain elements without overwhelming the viewer with too much detail in the background. 5. Lighting Considerations Warehouses typically have uneven lighting, which can be challenging. Here are some tips to handle lighting effectively: Portable LED Lights : These are incredibly useful for filling in darker areas or spotlighting key features. Natural Light : If the warehouse has windows or skylights, take advantage of the natural light by shooting during daylight hours. Natural light helps to brighten the space, making it look more inviting. Highlighting Safety Features : Use your lighting setup to make sure key safety features like fire exits, alarms, and sprinklers are clearly visible. 6. Capturing the Scale and Layout The vastness of a warehouse is one of its main selling points, so capturing its full scale on camera is essential. To achieve this: Wide-Angle Lenses : These are perfect for capturing the entire space in one frame, giving viewers a real sense of the building’s size. Slow Sweeping Shots : Whether using a drone (outdoors or in safe, open indoor areas) or a handheld gimbal, slow sweeping shots can beautifully convey the openness of the space. Focus on Key Features : While wide shots are important, don’t forget to zoom in on key elements like the sprinkler system, loading bays, or industrial equipment. These are details that potential tenants or buyers care about. 7. Editing Tips for Professional Results The editing process is where you’ll tie everything together. Here’s how to create a polished final product: Smooth Transitions : Use clean, smooth transitions between wide and close-up shots to keep the video flowing seamlessly. Abrupt cuts can disrupt the viewer's experience. Balance Wide and Close-Up Shots : Start with wide-angle shots to introduce the space, then transition to close-ups to highlight specific details, like sprinkler systems or rolling shutter doors. Color Grading : Warehouses can sometimes look drab due to their industrial nature. Color grading can help brighten up the footage and make the space look more inviting and professional. 8. Music Matters Music is an often-overlooked element, but it can make or break the feel of your video. The right soundtrack can help set the tone: Upbeat Music for Modern Spaces : If the warehouse is new and designed for high-tech businesses, upbeat, modern music can create a fresh, forward-thinking feel. Industrial Sounds for Older Buildings : For older, more industrial spaces, using slower, deeper, or more mechanical soundtracks can evoke a sense of durability and strength. Remember, the music should complement the visuals and not overpower them. A subtle, well-chosen track can elevate the entire video and make it more engaging. Our Final Thoughts on Filming Commercial Spaces and Warehouses: Filming warehouses and commercial spaces can be a challenge, but with careful planning, the right gear, and a focus on safety, you can deliver high-quality videos that showcase the property’s best features. Always be cautious when using drones indoors, and ensure you capture all the critical elements of the space that clients want to see. - The Benefits of Professional Real Estate Videography
In the world of real estate, presentation is key to attracting potential buyers and clients. While traditional marketing methods such as flyers and brochures can be effective, nothing compares to the impact of real estate photography and videography. With the advancement of technology and social media, sellers and real estate agents are now able to market their properties more effectively using high-quality images and videos. Professional real estate videography can give buyers a more realistic and immersive experience of a property. Real estate photographers and videographers understand how to capture the best angles, lighting, and composition and also know how to showcase the property’s highlights. This results in a more visually appealing presentation that captivates potential buyers and gives them a better sense of the property’s unique selling points. Another advantage of real estate videography is that it allows buyers to take a virtual tour of the property, making the experience more engaging and interactive. This is especially beneficial for remote buyers or those who are unable to visit the property in person. Through video tours, buyers can get an idea of how each room connects to the other and how the property flows. This makes the decision-making process easier as they can get a better sense of the property before committing to visiting in person. Furthermore, real estate videography can help set a property apart from competitors. With so many properties on the market, it is important to stand out from the crowd. By showcasing a property through a professional video, the property becomes more memorable, and potential buyers may be more inclined to consider it over other listings. Real estate videography can also be used as an effective marketing tool for real estate agents. By providing high-quality videos of their listings, real estate agents can showcase their professionalism and attention to detail. This can lead to more referral business and establish a reputation as a top real estate agent in the area. Overall, professional real estate videography is a worthwhile investment for anyone looking to sell or rent out a property. It offers a more engaging and immersive experience for potential buyers and sets a property apart from its competitors. With the rise of social media and the internet, high-quality visuals are essential in capturing the attention of potential buyers. Real estate videographers specialize in providing these visuals and can help take any property marketing to the next level. - Real Estate Photography Checklist by DUPLOOYMEDIA
My goal is to photograph your property with the highest quality that will wow buyers and attract offers. To ensure your photoshoot goes smoothly and safely, I’ve put together this preparation checklist of things you should do prior to your scheduled shoot. General Prep ❑ Be shoot-ready: Cleaning and staging needs to be done before I arrive, preferably the day before your photoshoot. I may move small items (flowers, small pictures, etc.) to improve photo composition, but larger items need to be in place before I arrive, and staging accessories need to be in place as well. ❑ Secure or remove pets: I love pets but we can’t have them around for your photoshoot. Dogs must be secured or off the property to ensure the safety of myself and my equipment. Cats should be secured as well, although they usually pose fewer problems than dogs (cats often just hide). It's also a good idea to hide pet food and water bowls as well. ❑ Plan not to be seen: All occupants should plan on either being off the property or remain in areas where they can't be seen during the photoshoot. Rooms overlap in the photos, people can cause shadows and reflections, and there is risk to equipment that will be setup throughout the property. ❑ Use the garage for storage: I normally don’t shoot garages, so this is a great place to store items you’d like to hide. Outside Prep ❑ Clear the cars: Make sure no cars are in the driveway. If possible, also move cars from the street in front of the home. We want as clear a view as possible of your property. ❑ Do NOT wet driveways: If a wet look is desired, this can be added in the editing process. Watering driveways can cause patches of dry spots and puddles, so adding it in editing is best. ❑ Hide trashcans: Trashcans can be placed on the side of the property or in the garage. ❑ Hide hoses: Do this the day before the shoot since hoses can drip water onto the pavement when being moved, leaving puddles in your pictures. ❑ Mow and trim the yard: Do at least 24 hours prior to your photoshoot. ❑ Turn off sprinklers: Do not water the day of the shoot to prevent puddles on pavement. ❑ Pick up poop: If you have a dog, make sure that all of their droppings are cleared from the yard. ❑ Prep pool and spa: If you have a pool and/or spa, please have them clean with covers removed. For spas, provide instructions to the realtor on how to turn it on. ❑ Prep water features: If you have fountains, waterfalls, etc., please clean them and provide instructions to the realtor on how to turn them on. ❑ Remove for-sale sign: The for-sale sign should be removed from the property or installed after the shoot, since visible signs violate MLS policies and can’t always be edited out. ❑ Clean patio furniture: Dust and remove cobwebs from all outdoor furniture. Do not hose down your furniture the day of your shoot, since this can create puddles. Inside Prep ❑ Declutter kitchen: A few items on the counters are usually fine, but dishes, sponges, rags, etc. should be put away. It's best to remove all magnets, pictures, etc. from the refrigerator and remove throw rugs from the floor. ❑Declutter bathrooms: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, and other "personal" items should be hidden. Decorative unused soaps, candles, flowers, etc. are preferred. It’s also good to remove all throw rugs from the floor. ❑ Prep bedrooms: All bedrooms should have their beds made and items put away. ❑ Hide trashcans: Trashcans can distract so it’s best to hide all of them in closets or the garage. ❑ Hide portable fans: Ceiling fans are selling items but portable fans can give the wrong impression. It’s best to hide all portable fans in closets or the garage. ❑ Hide cords and remotes: Sometimes electrical cords can’t be hidden, but you will have more appealing pictures if you can hide TV remotes, game consoles, and any noticeable cords. ❑ Clear entryways: Remove all shoes, umbrellas, and similar items from entryways. ❑Open blinds with views: Your indoor photos will show outdoor views if there are views, or just light if a window looks onto a neighbor or other unappealing view. ❑Turn on lights: Before I arrive, please make sure all interior lights are turned on. If need-be, please replace all burned-out bulbs at least 24 hours before the photoshoot. ❑ Turn off ceiling fans: Before I arrive, please make sure all ceiling fans are turned off. Twilight Prep If you’ve scheduled a twilight shoot the following are additional items to prepare before I arrive. Note that twilights have tight schedules to ensure optimal lighting, so please make sure all of these items are ready before I arrive. ❑ Turn on all interior and exterior lights: All lights throughout the property need to be turned on. Please replace all burned-out bulbs at least 24 hours before the photoshoot. ❑Turn on spas and remove covers: If you have a spa, remove the cover, and turn it before I arrive. Turn on the lights in the spa as well. ❑ Turn on pool lights: If you have a pool, turn on the pool lights before I arrive. ❑ Turn on water features: If you have fountains, waterfalls, or similar water features, please turn them on before I arrive. Thank you for your time and patience to go through this checklist! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me anytime. - How To Be The Best Wedding Videographer You Can Be.
How to film a wedding - "The difference between a good wedding filmmaker and a great one doesn’t come down to having the best camera or gear. The difference is you. Are you the type of person that a couple wants to have attend their wedding? These are a few ways you can make yourself a better wedding videographer." - Pierre du Plooy How to be the best wedding videographers - A HowToGuide: HowToStep1, Communicate with the couple, venue, and vendors. Well before the wedding date, you should have a sit-down meeting with the engaged couple. Get to know what they are looking for in their video. Do they want to make sure you capture certain moments? Will there be any surprises or choreographed dances you need to know about? Will the bride be wearing her Great-Great Grandmother’s earrings? Being ready to capture these moments will truly make your work stand out.\n\nReach out to the ceremony and reception venues and find out if they have any rules or regulations. Many churches won’t allow videographers in certain areas, so it’s important to note if you will need to bring a zoom lens.\n\nTalk to some of the vendors, mainly the ones you will work with on the wedding day. Knowing vendors in the industry is your gateway to success. Their recommendations can help you land future weddings. First, get to know the Wedding Coordinator. Ask for a copy of the schedule and contacts for the other vendors. Then you can ask the DJ about their setup. Will they let you plug into their soundboard to get backup audio? Will they bring a high-end light kit for the reception? See if the photographer is willing to collaborate with you. Can you shoot side by side and rotate for closeups? Getting acquainted with everyone will help the shoot move along much smoother. HowToStep2, Stay fast while carrying as little gear as possible. The morning of a wedding is a fairly typical operation. The groom and his groomsmen hang out, the bride and bridesmaids get their hair and makeup done. After that, you will be running around until the wedding is over. So it’s best to set the heavy bag in the corner and take it easy on your shoulders and back. Only carry what you need.\n\nHaving every lens option at once is no use to you. A camera and two lenses are perfect for running around. Be sure to have extra batteries and formatted memory cards ready to go. Nothing is worse than having to tell the couple to hold off on tossing the bouquet because your batteries died. I’ve seen it happen. Don’t be that person. If necessary, find an outlet and have a charging station for any batteries you have already used. HowToStep3, Audio is crucial, have backups ready. There is no re-“I Dos” in weddings. If you don’t capture things as they happen, then you didn’t do your job. It’s best to have multiple audio sources recorded. Does your camera capture quality sound? If not, have external recorders ready to go. Try to avoid putting the mic on a bride, instead go for a lavalier microphone on the officiant or groom.\n\nIf the DJ is running sound, you may be able to plug into their soundboard. That’s why it is beneficial to have talked to the DJ beforehand. Keep in mind every DJ is different, so it’s no guarantee that you will get quality sound. That’s why you should only rely on them for backup audio. HowToStep4, Always capture the traditional wedding shots. You may feel the need to experiment on the wedding day, but be sure to always get the typical wedding shots too. Experimenting is a great way to help you find your style, but don’t forget that couples want to see their vows, first dance, and cake cutting. Make sure you have the important things covered before you get all those cool transition shots. HowToStep5, Keep the camera stable. Stabilization is necessary. Going handheld is not going to cut it. Whether you use a tripod, monopod, glidecam, gimbal, slider, or shoulder rig, be sure that you can quickly switch between your support gear. By putting the same quick release plate on all of your gear, you can easily switch on the go.\n\nTripods are great during the ceremony, but can easily get in the way elsewhere. When you’re in a tiny hotel room with the entire bridal party, family members, hairstylists and makeup artists, you won’t have much space to work. Being able to quickly switch to a monopod, gimbal or glidecam will keep you shooting. HowToStep6, Capture enough B-roll. B-roll will be your best friend and worst enemy when editing. Not having enough will make your job much harder. It’s easy to remember to shoot exteriors of the venue, but don’t forget that there are people coming to these venues. When the bride and groom watch their wedding video, they will want to see their friends and family in attendance.\n\nHave an extra camera capture parts of the crowd during the ceremony. This footage will always come in handy to hide any rough edits. It’s also great to cut to the crowd if the photographer walks into your shot of the couple at the altar. HowToStep7, Be prepare for low light situations. Evening receptions can be a nightmare for wedding filmmakers. Indoor or outdoor, it will probably be dark. After dinner is served, venues dim the lights so the party can begin. Hopefully, you and the DJ also talked about his light setup, but you will still need your own lights to help you get certain shots.\n\nIf your camera doesn’t handle low light well, keep in mind that guests don’t want to be blinded by video lights all night. When you use lights, be sure to use them sparingly. Don’t kill the mood by leaving them on during the entire reception. To become the best wedding videographer you can be - Adapt your own approach. With over 15 years experience in the wedding industry, we wanted to share the best practices couples can take on their wedding day to get the ultimate wedding film. THE ULTIMATE WEDDING VIDEOGRAPHY GUIDE In this wedding videography guide, we will cover everything from the best place to get ready for your wedding to how to have perfect audio in your wedding film. By no means are any of these suggestions required, every single wedding is unique. But, we do believe if you follow these steps to the best of your ability your wedding film and photographs will be amazing! WEDDING PLANNING STAGES First, we wanted to share a little bit of background into our pre-wedding process and ways couples can create a seamless process for their vendor team. We love taking care of our clients, and we believe when you book DUPLOOYMEDIA you are booking a team that truly values you. Wedding planning is stressful and can be overwhelming at times. So, to make the process easier on you on your wedding vendor team this is what we suggest. About one month out from your wedding day the details will all be coming together. Either you or your wedding planner creates a master list of every single wedding vendor from the caterer and cake baker to the florist and photographer. Once you have this list, email it to all of your vendors. Your wedding vendor team will communicate ahead of your wedding, and it will allow your vendors to have a master list after the wedding! Share the timeline you create with your vendors as well! We also encourage couples to talk with your photographer, videographers, and planner to come up with a timeline that is suitable for everyone! This creates a stress-free wedding day for everyone! Relax and don’t be afraid to talk with your vendor team if you have any questions. We are here for you, and more than willing to answer any questions you have! THE GETTING READY PROCESS Second, we wanted to dive into the getting ready process. A lot of times the getting ready process starts hours before the photographers and videographers arrive at the location. We suggest getting ready in front of the windows if there are some available. Natural light is always the best for photographers and videographers. If necessary we can bring light into any space, but your skin always looks best with natural light. Normally your hair and makeup team will do their best to find a place with natural light, but it can never hurt to suggest it! If you are getting ready at a hotel talk with them about your concerns, some hotels have better window options than others! The natural light is also beautiful when you put on your dress and details! Speaking of details, we suggest is to have a box with all of your This allows the photographer and videographers to be able to quickly and easily find the details and get the shots of them without having to hunt down all the little pieces. You can even give the box to your maid or matron of honour so she can have them ready when we arrive. LETTER READING OR VOW AUDIO If you are planning on writing letters to each other on the wedding day or saying private vows to each other this is a magical and special moment that we love to document. There are so many creative and special ways to incorporate this into your wedding video. We have a few tips to share to make these moments look and sound absolutely amazing. First, when reading your letter or vows, we will take you to a quiet place to relax. Wedding days can be hectic and you will want to be calm and not bothered. Read slowly, as if you are talking to your fiancé(e). If you mess up, it’s ok just keep going. Don’t hold back any emotions, after all, it is a very special and emotional day. We love keeping everything genuine and real! COUPLES SESSIONS AND FIRST LOOK We always will suggest to our couples the first look. About 75% of our couples choose to do a first look, so by no means is it required, but we do believe it makes the wedding day flow smoother. There are a few reasons we suggest a first look, but the main reason is it takes away some of the anxiety and stress of the day. You have the opportunity to see your best friend and have a private moment together before the day gets very hectic and crazy. Enjoy this moment and take a moment to yourselves. We like to capture the first look and then give our couples a few minutes alone to just take in the time with each other. Second, it allows us to do a couple’s session before the wedding, and a small sunset session after the ceremony. (We LOVE sunset sessions and highly recommend working this into your timeline.) For sunset sessions, we usually quickly pull the couple away from the reception to get a few more shots. These quick sessions are usually only 15 minutes and you will be so happy you did this! FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHS As wedding videographers, we do not typically capture family photographs. We leave this time to the photographer to capture your family portraits. However, by doing these prior to the wedding ceremony, it gives us time to set up for the ceremony itself. To make the process easy on your photographers, we suggest working with them on a list of family photos prior to the wedding day! THE WEDDING CEREMONY The wedding ceremony is one of our favourite parts of the wedding day. It is the moment you each get to commit your lives to the other. We capture every single ceremony using at least three cameras, and we usually place a microphone on the officiant and the groom. This allows us to get high-quality audio of the officiant and of the bride and groom. If you plan on having readings, a soloist or vocalist, or anything unique in the ceremony let us know, so we can be sure to take steps to make sure this is recorded for you. There is nothing worse than a surprise reading, and there is nothing we can do once the ceremony has started. THE RECEPTION Let’s get the party started! You are married! Relax, and dance the night away with your friends and family. There is nothing special we suggest here. Enjoy the party, and you might even catch us on the dance floor too. THE EXIT Whether you have a sparkler exit, bubbles, flower petals, streamers, or another creative way to send you off, we suggest you stop in the middle for a kiss or the classic dip and kiss. This is a perfect photo opportunity and moment with all of your guests celebrating you as husband and wife! After all, you are married and off to spend the rest of your life with your best friend! Follow any or all of these steps in our wedding videography guide and your videography and photography will be amazing! Just remember, your wedding vendor team is here for you and happy to answer any and all questions you have! Our goal is to make your day the happiest and as stress-free as possible!
